The Bird Committee works to promote the study, conservation and awareness of birds and their habitats in eastern Africa. This is being done through the work of the following Sub-committee's and Schemes:

Records Sub - committee

• Collects and processes bird records in cooperation with the Dept. of Ornithology, NMK
• Updates the Kenyan Bird Atlas and database
• Facilitates the East African Rarities Committee (Note that the Rarities Committee is a part of the Bird Committee, not something separate!)
• Publishing records in Kenya Birds and the Nature Net Bird Hotline

Publications Sub - committee

· Producing the magazine Kenya Birds and the scientific journal Scopus.
· Producing checklists for different areas in the region. · Developing the EA bird checklist.

Funds disbursement subcommittee

This subcommittee manages the Bird Committee funds. A number of funds is designated to research and monitoring of vulnerable bird species and their habitats through the Department of Ornithology.

Other funds are open to applications:

Currently, the Small Grants fund has run out and is awaiting replenishment. In future, this fund will be geared to the activities of Site Support Groups in the Important Bird Areas Program.

• The Bursary fund is designated to support high school education of pupils promising and active in conservation related to Important Bird Areas
• The Binocular Fund supports guides active in Important Bird Areas to obtain binoculars and identification field guides. This fund is a donation of Sir J. James, former British High Commissioner to Kenya. Applications guidelines can be obtained from the Nature Kenya office

The Ringing Scheme of Eastern Africa

Supports ringing of birds and training in bird ringing through the Nairobi Ringing Group. Birds are ringed at regular sessions at the museum grounds and the Nairobi Arboretum and during excursions e.g. to Ngulia, Tsavo West.

Other Bird Committee activities

• Supporting Nature Kenya's Wednesday Morning Birdwalks around Nairobi.
• Supporting public events such as 'World Birdwatch' to raise awareness and funds for bird conservation
• Advising on ornithological issues
• Together with the Ornithology Department of the National Museums of Kenya, will jointly run a weeklong general introduction to ornithology course every year: Fundamentals of Ornithology
• Maintaining the KENYABIRDSNET e-group, to support the communication of Kenya birders and those who are interested in Kenya birds
• Assists in coordinating Kenya BirdFinder an internet-based network of databases for the collection of bird observation worldwide
